Mailbox Monday -- January 11: Family Book-Buying Edition!

Welcome to Mailbox Monday, the weekly meme hosted by Marcia from The Printed Page, where book lovers share the titles they received for review, purchased, or otherwise obtained during the past week.

My family joined up with Serena and her husband for a book-buying marathon on Saturday, beginning with a trip to a library sale, followed by Wonder Book and Barnes & Noble to spend Christmas cash and gift cards.  We were exhausted but had a great time.

My library sale purchases:

The Red Tent by Anita Diamant
Old Friends and New Fancies by Sybil G. Brinton
Survivors: True Stories of Children in the Holocaust by Allan Zullo and Mara Bovsun

Wonder Book purchases:

My Enemy's Cradle by Sara Young
Eva's Cousin by Sibylle Knauss
Schindler's List by Thomas Keneally
The Night Watch by Sarah Waters
Stones From the River by Ursula Hegi
The Fall of Saigon: The End of the Vietnam War by Michael V. Uschan

Barnes & Noble purchases:

Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen
Persuasion by Jane Austen
Lady Susan, The Watsons, Sanditon by Jane Austen
The Darcys & The Bingleys by Marsha Altman
The Plight of the Darcy Brothers by Marsha Altman

Books-A-Million purchases (not pictured):

I was browsing the bargain section at the mall on Friday night while my husband was wandering the electronics store, and I couldn't pass these up.

The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett
Skeletons at the Feast by Chris Bohjalian

Contest win from Savvy Verse & Wit (not pictured):

Human Dark With Sugar by Brenda Shaughnessy

For review from the authors (not pictured):

Becoming Alice: A Memoir by Alice Rene
Tomaree by Debbie Robson

The Girl also made out like a bandit.  Here's what she snagged at the library sale:

Egyptology by Emily Sands
Shadow Horse by Alison Hart
Captain Underpants and the Attack of the Talking Toilets by Dav Pilkey
Captain Underpants and the Perilous Plot of Professor Poopypants by Dav Pilkey
Captain Underpants and the Big, Bad Battle of the Bionic Booger Boy, Part 1: The Night of the Nasty Nostril Nuggets by Dav Pilkey

The Girl's Wonder Book purchases:

Minerva Clark Gets a Clue by Karen Karbo
Night of the Living Dummy (Goosebumps) by R.L. Stine
Monster Blood II (Goosebumps) by R.L. Stine

And The Girl's Barnes & Noble purchases:

Captain Underpants and the Invasion of the Incredibly Naughty Cafeteria Ladies From Outer Space (and the Subsequent Assault of the Equally Evil Lunchroom Zombie Nerds) by Dav Pilkey
Captain Underpants and the Big, Bad Battle of the Bionic Booger Boy, Part 2: The Revenge of the Ridiculous Robo-Boogers by Dav Pilkey
Captain Underpants and the Preposterous Plight of the Purple Potty People by Dav Pilkey
The Blob That Ate Everyone (Goosebumps) by R.L. Stine
Bone: The Great Cow Race by Jeff Smith

I bet you can guess what books she and her friends are into these days!  She brought one home that the teacher let her borrow and read it in two days, laughing out loud much of the time.  She also wanted to display the bear ornament from Serena and her hubby and the stuffed animal Serena's hubby won for her from the machine in the diner where we stopped for lunch.

My husband, Jerry, even got into the book-buying action.  He's not much of a reader, but he likes thriller, paranormal, and sports books and will read them from time to time.  It was his first time at the library sale, and he soon found out why we love it so much.  He actually bought more than I did at the library sale:

Touching Evil by Kay Hooper
The Devil's Punchbowl by Greg Iles
The Devil Wears Pinstripes by Jim Caple
Shakespeare on Baseball compiled by David Goodnough
Idiot by Johnny Damon with Peter Golenbock
Neanderthal by John Darnton
The Neighbor by Lisa Gardner
Can a Dead Man Strike Out?: Offbeat Baseball Questions and Their Improbable Answers by Mark S. Halfon

He also made a purchase at Wonder Book:

Touch the Dark by Karen Chance
Blood Magic by Matthew Cook

Okay, now there are so many books piled on my bedroom floor that I'm hoping it doesn't collapse into my living room down below!  But at least we'll never run out of things to read!

What books did you welcome into your home recently?

When you're done reading all the books, you can use them to build support columns for the first floor. Then you won't have to worry about the stacks in your bedroom after the next book-buying-bonanza! ;)

~Marie: It's a good thing we don't shop for books on a regular basis, right?

~Dawn: That's a great suggestion! Not sure how my hubby would feel about that, though. ;)
